Meerkat, Periscope or at All??

OK media friends and public safety professionals. A new tool for the PIO toolbox has emerged and I would like to know what you think. First, there was Meerkat and now a newer version, Periscope.

Both allow live streaming through Twitter with your IPhone. I understand an Android version is soon to be released.

Public Safety leaders in Social Media for Emergency Managers (SMEM) said that live streaming with your phone is a game changer and the most significant advancement in social media since the introduction of Twitter itself, really??

First, Meerkat or Periscope?? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using one or another??

Media – is there a purpose for a PIO to use live streaming from their phone.

What are your thoughts on live streaming??

Do you plan on using one format or the other??

Which one will you use??? Meerkat or Periscope??

    Hi Mark,

I’ve only tried Periscope and I like it. T.J. Smith over here on the police side has used it much more than me and with great success as well. It is a quick and easy way to get information out and have it archived for 24 hours. A disadvantage is very few of the other responders know of the ability to broadcast live from a mobile device and you have to be very careful where you broadcast from and what other audio you may pick up (you all know what I’m talking about).

A concern with Periscope is now instead of the public taking video of less than stellar operations and it showing up on the internet later they could be getting broadcast live since now everyone with a cell phone can be sending live video.
