MEDIA CONTACT: Mark E. Brady, Chief Spokesperson, 240-508-7930

At around 11:30 am, Friday, February 18, 2011, Fire/EMS units were alerted to a possible fire at the University of Maryland.

Truck 809 from the Bladensburg Fire/EMS Station was responding to the incident with emergency lights on and siren sounding.  While en route, Truck 809 was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, at the traffic light controlled intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and Decatur Street in Bladensburg.

The Jeep was occupied by 4 civilians: 3 children and an adult female driver. All occupants were transported to area hospitals for a check-up of non-life threatening injuries.

Two of the five firefighters on-board Truck 809 were also transported to an area hospital for a check-up. As a matter of standard operating procedure the driver of the ladder truck will undergo post-crash alcohol/drug screening.

Each vehicle sustained considerable damage. North-bound Kenilworth Avenue is closed during the investigation.

The call in which they were responding to at the University of Maryland turned out to be food burning on the stove and was quickly handled by the first arriving unit from College Park.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is conducting the crash investigation.

The Bladensburg Ladder Truck sustained significant damage to the front end from the collision. (BRADY-PGFD PIO)
